Step-by-Step Procedures


If you have a Windows 98 Second Edition (SE) or Windows Millennium startup disk and an Adaptec host follow these instructions -
Download QDPS to your hard drive, then copy to a blank formatted floppy.
Boot your system to the startup disk, and at the selector prompt, start the system with CD ROM support. This will automatically load the ASPI manager drivers for Adaptec branded hosts.
When the boot disk reaches the A:\ prompt, remove the disk, and install the disk with the QDPS utility, type QDPSSCSI at the A:\ prompt and hit enter.
QDPS is designed to run on Quantum? S.M.A.R.T. capable hard drives (the utility will identify a drive as S.M.A.R.T. capable). As with any system test or diagnostic, Maxtor recommends that you have a complete backup of your drive before beginning.
If you do not have an Adaptec host or Windows 98 Second Edition (or Windows Me) startup disk follow the instructions below -
Prepare a DOS 6.22 or Windows 95/98 bootable diskette and copy the HIMEM.SYS file to the diskette (HIMEM.SYS is required if you are testing a SCSI drive). The HIMEM.SYS file will be found in the default directory where your operating system was installed on your hard drive (typically either the DOS or WINDOWS directory).
Copy the QDPSSCSI.EXE utility to the diskette and be sure to copy the host adapter's DOS ASPI driver to the diskette as well.
Reboot your system using the diskette. Be sure to load the host adapter's DOS ASPI driver and HIMEM.SYS driver via the CONFIG.SYS file. For example, if you are using an Adaptec 2940UW card you would use the ASPI8DOS.SYS driver with the following entries in the CONFIG.SYS file:
DEVICE=A:\HIMEM.SYS

DEVICE=A:\ASPI8DOS.SYS
At the A: prompt, type QDPSSCSI and then [ENTER].
You will be presented with a licensing agreement. After acceptance of the licensing agreement, the utility will begin running. If you DO NOT accept the licensing agreement, you will be returned to the A: prompt.

If your system has only one drive, the utility will begin immediately. If your system has more than one drive installed, you will be presented with a menu of available drives. To select a drive to test, enter its number and the test will begin.

This download creates a self-booting DOS diskette to run the DFT utility. The Drive Fitness Test (DFT) provides a quick, reliable method to test SCSI and IDE hard disk drives. The Drive Fitness Test analyze function performs read tests without overwriting customer data. (However, Drive Fitness Test is bundled with some restoration utilities that will overwrite data). The POWERMAX.EXE utility is designed to perform diagnostic read/write verifications on Maxtor/Quantum hard drives. These tests will determine hard drive integrity. The POWERMAX.EXE utility is effective on all ATA (IDE) hard drives with a capacity greater than or equal to 500 MB. Maxtor recommends the use of this utility for troubleshooting potential hard drive problems. These problems include, but are not limited to the following:

*Potential hard drive surface problems (e.g., bad clusters, bad sectors, partitioning/formatting problems, etc.).
*Drive recognition problems (e.g. hard drive that is not recognized by the operating system).
Software removal.

***NoteowerMax v4.06 will not detect Ultra ATA hard disks connected to motherboards with embedded NVIDIA chipsets (SATA drives are supported). A new version to address this issue is currently in development and is slated for release soon. Please check the PowerMax download page periodically for updates. All versions of PowerMax prior to 4.06 are no longer supported, it is recommended that you update to version 4.06 before testing your hard disk.
